First Week of College Classes: iPhone Setup That Saves Your Semester

Syllabus capture, campus map pins, professor office hours, and notification rules for the first five days of a new term.

The first week is chaos disguised as orientation. You do not need a perfect system. You need five decisions on your phone before week two buries you in portals and PDFs.

Day 1: one calendar, all hard times

Add immovable anchors:

  • Each class meeting time and building or room
  • Lab sections and discussion groups
  • Known deadlines already on syllabi (drops, first quizzes)

Use the campus map app or pin buildings in Maps if you are new to layout. Walking time between back-to-back classes belongs on the calendar as travel buffers.

Day 2: syllabus triage per course

For each class, capture only:

  • Professor name and office hours
  • Grading weights (exams, participation, projects)
  • Late work policy in one sentence
  • Required apps or clicker platforms

Store in course notes, not scattered screenshots. Name files CHEM101-syllabus-fall so search works in November.

Day 3: notification diet

Turn on notifications only for:

  • Calendar alerts for classes (optional)
  • Email for school account if you check it daily
  • Learning management app if professors use it for deadlines

Mute class GroupMe or Discord except @mentions if groups explode. Notification debt in week one causes missed real deadlines later.

Day 4: assignment capture habit

When a professor mentions a due date aloud, log it before you leave the room:

  • Title as professor said it
  • Due date and time if given
  • Course tag

If the date is vague (“mid-October”), set a placeholder and update when the portal posts.

Day 5: study block placeholder

You do not know workload yet. Still block two 90-minute study slots on your calendar as movable placeholders. Week two replaces them with real tasks when readings hit.

Students who wait until the first exam to schedule study rarely keep GPA goals.

Professor and TA contact sheet

One note with:

  • Email etiquette your school expects
  • TA names for each lab
  • Where to find cancelled class announcements

Saves panic when weather closes campus.

Photo discipline

Allowed uses:

  • Whiteboard examples you will transcribe same day
  • Room number doors you will forget

Delete blurry duplicates weekly. Camera roll is not a filing system.

Health and ID basics

Add to Health app or wallet:

  • Student ID barcode if digital ID exists
  • Insurance card photo if on your plan
  • Campus safety number

Unrelated to grades, related to staying enrolled.

What not to do in week one

  • Buy every recommended textbook before confirming which are required
  • Join five study groups before you know your schedule
  • Copy the entire syllabus into tasks line by line

Capture graded work and policies first. Readings expand as assigned.

Week two preview

Sunday of week two:

  • Compare portal to your task list for mismatches
  • Move study blocks to match real reading load
  • Log any grades already posted (participation quizzes)

First week setup is scaffolding. The semester builds on whether times and deadlines live in one trusted place on your phone.
