Exam Week iPhone Rules for Students (Without Burning Out)

Temporary screen limits, notification triage, and study blocks during finals—stricter than a normal week, looser than a full digital detox.

Finals week is not the time for a permanent life overhaul. It is the time for temporary phone rules that protect sleep and three-hour review blocks—then expire when grades are in.

Set an end date on every limit

Pick your last exam day. Schedule app limits and focus modes to auto-relax the day after. Open-ended restrictions fail because brains know they are fake forever.

Tier your apps for exam week only

Tier Examples Rule
Block Short video, mobile games Off except 30-min evening window
Slow Group chats, shopping Check 3× daily at set times
Open Maps, banking, notes, music Always

Write tiers on paper. Overrides should be rare and named (“lab partner question”).

Notifications: exams need silence, not FOMO

  • Mute non-class group chats for seven days
  • Keep calendar and class email VIP
  • Turn off sports and social “trending” pushes

You can re-subscribe to noise after the last scantron.

Pair blocks with location or time

Example: library 2–5 p.m. = study focus with only PDF and notes allowed. Dorm after 11 p.m. = downtime allowlist shrinks to music and alarm.

Same phone, different contexts, beats one global ban you resent.

Sleep guardrail (non-negotiable)

No phone in bed for scrolling. Charge across the room; use a cheap alarm if needed. One all-nighter costs more recall than one extra chapter skimmed at 2 a.m.

Breaks that actually reset

Between blocks:

  • Walk outside without podcasts
  • Eat away from screen
  • Ten-minute timer, then back

Scrolling “breaks” extend into hours.

Coordinate with roommates and family

Post a note: “In focus until 4—text only if urgent.” Reduces guilt and random interruptions.

After the last exam

  • Delete or disable exam-week schedules
  • Review Screen Time: which limit helped?
  • Keep only sleep and morning focus if they worked

Sustainability beats hero mode.
